Looking around at my surroundings. I see everyone.. and they are just living. Going about their lives with no real purpose to speak of, except to accomplish what they do everyday... getting through it alive. I asked a friend of mine what they saw as a purpose to life the other day, their reply being "To be happy... to live happily. You die, then nothing happens so.. live your life now."
This gave me an incredibly empty feeling.
What real point is there to our lives? Say you believe in the Big Bang bringing us into exsitence. Then we are just the result of a random explosion.. and there is no point to us being alive. We have no relevance to anything else in the universe. Everything we think we have "accomplished" as humans isn't worth ...scat! (For want of another word...). Things we fight about, things we get upset about - it's all nothing! We can be so self important as humans - yet we fail to recognize how insignificant we really are.
Why are we even here? There has to be more to it than just "being happy" and continuing the human race.
I am figuring this is why there is so many different beliefs about things in our society. So many people all trying to find their way, a higher purpose, a reason. Maybe people are so scared of being useless they need to create these things in order to feel like they are doing something worthwhile.
I myself have my own religious beliefs, as a lot of people I know do. I feel like I have something to do with my life. I feel like I have a real purpose... things don't seem so trivial. It's quite an up-lifting feeling. Believing what I said before, I found depressing even to think about. There has to be more.. doesn't there? There has to be a reason for us being around. We have the most amazing things around us... I don't mean man made things, I mean life, I mean this earth, I mean the universe. How could something as intricate as the human brain result from an explosion? If we evolved, how is it that the monkeys (apes, gorillas? I cant keep up wth the theories..) are still here? Why aren't they as advanced as we are? Why isn't any animal as andvanced as we are?
There are so many things we question as humans, but do we ever really find the solution the these kind of topics. No one agrees on Creation or Evoltuion. Everyone believes their beliefs are the right ones. How are we really supposed to find the truth? Or is there no truth? Must we just come up with something that satisfies our minds enough to bear living in a hopeless existence?
What is the point? What is the purpose?

wow. i'm struggling with the same questions myself lately... and i don't know what to say. however, one thing that i thought of while reading your post was that the very fact that humans feel a need for meaning and ultimate purpose in their existence must mean that their is an ultimate purpose somewhere that is worth aspiring to. just like the desire for sleep; we get sleepy because there is such a thing as sleep. i think that our desire for purpose points to the existence of purpose. if purpose in some form did not exist, we couldn't want it. it wouldn't occur to us. in the same way, the incomplete meaning and purpose people find in various activities must point to a greater purpose. the "pale shadow of things to come" theory, if you will.
ahh i love posts like these, the really deep ones. yesterday night after church me and my friends went to a mcdonalds and there was a man who was fretting that he had lost his paper, the lady who was working handed him another one just to get rid of him. the man got a meal and sat in front of us, then he left to go to the toilet. my group leader put $10 on top of his newspaper. the man returned and just wondered who it couldve been.
its a lot like life, its so true and beautiful when you just dont have an answer and just wonder. i do have a belief, im a christian, but i dont shun other religions, or ridicule them, the meaning to life is a truth that we will probably find out after death. but i stick to my belief because it works for me, because i think its real.
some people say "God is just a stupid idea..." and others say "evolution is just a stupid idea..."
personally, the wonder of life, the ways of life, its all a great big wonder and if i was given an answer that i was forced to accept, id appreciate life a whole lot less.
I can assure you that there is meaning to life, to living and there are more then 1 and i can tell you that one of them is for the world to develop. You see scientists develop new cures or ways to get to planets to develop an understanding of how everything works. Things we fight about and get upset about are just emotions as humans we have developed how they affect our body and mind and why we cry e.g. death of close one. Im trying not to make out that your wrong although i feel i have, as you said everyone has their own beliefs and i at the moment believe what i am saying.
Good post though :)
sorry for posting twice, this is more of my personal belief here, its a comment for another blog regarding existentialism but theres bits about existence, purpose and stuff, so here:
"im going to start by telling you that i do follow christian faith, not existentialism. having said that, there is still a lot of this i agree with, my heart affirms that there is a truth to life and im just going to keep looking for it, and thats my personal conviction. to seek truth and never find it. it sounds contradictory, that i am a christian without accepting all the answers, but every 'religion' (such an ugly word) has something that i long for, and thats knowledge.
the more answers i retain (and im not going to say that they are right, because it is my personal conviction to believe they are relevant to my existence), the more questions i have laid out for me.
Buddhists have it right when they say that one persons actions influences a world, which is why they are so graceful. it seems we are led by past decisions that imply "despair, sadness, depression, anxiety, and death", i am an altruist and a pacifist. i rank gandhi as one of my personal heroes because he prevented india from being taken over by britain without any violence whatsoever. his words (and my mantra) is "be the change you wish to see in the world."
we dont know how or why exactly we're here, however, we are responsible for everything that has happened during our existence. i bare no grudges of any belief, but i do have grudges for people who follow the crowd and form reasons of living for the heck of it without ever seeking truth."
